Tell me about your football career
For me, all through junior school I was stuck as a centre half because "you're tall"

With some mates formed a team in an u16 league, lost our first match 24-0 to Carpenters Youth Club but it wasn't my fault as I was substituted at half time when it was only 11-0.

From 1979 played 12 seasons for the same team in the Dagenham and District League. We went from division 5 to division 1 over the years but always promoted as runners up. We lost every cup final we got to so I had loads of runners up medals.

Played as goalkeeper, full back or right/left midfield, but not all at the same time.

What about you

Not over yet.

As I am 58, I'm slowly letting go of the idea of a professional career...

But there's no way I'm going to go for walking football. When I can't run, I'm going for a proper sport that doesn't require running, like bowls.

Started at RB in junior school, eventually outside right or inside forward, had a terrific shot if I say so myself but was otherwise pretty shit

I was the leading scorer for the Cubs in the district, 3 seasons in a row. I probably could have gone further than Payet had I focused on football but I wanted to become an estate agent instead.

Re: Tell me about your football career
I discovered right at the end of my Sunday morning career that I was a good finisher. Years wasted in goal or defence then found it easy to beat the keeper.

Mind you usually from close in and sometimes the ball didn't actually reach the back of the net.

I could generally find the net once I'd located the pitch...

I played for London Borough of Newham u 14... Played all 14 games we won them all. Something that had Never been done before. We Played at Terrance McMillan stadium for our home games. We beat Barking 3-1 in the final of the London cup at Terrance McMillan and Dagenham at the Ford ground 4-0 in the final of the Essex cup.. These cups are known as the Finch and Crisp shields..
Played with Graham Rousse Aka Peanuts, great goal keeper and Jimmy Tibbs jr our striker.. Amazed none of the players went pro.

I was on the books of Spurs for a couple of years, use to go to WHL for training, we would play our games at their training facility in Cheshunt. I would go training with Terry Gibson. Keith Burkinshaw was the manager back then. Never forget the day they told me I was cut, I was 16...
.Played semi pro for Leytonstone and Ilford for a couple of years.. Ended up playing for Toby out of Dagenham as an amateur, had some great clashes with Tate and Lyle and Gidea park..

Great thread BBB.

1978-1982 Played RB for school and local youth team. Did pretty well.

1983 - Discovered birds, fags, and booze

1983 - Forgot about playing football (in those days it was one or the other)

Re: Tell me about your football career
Centre mid all through school and senior football (mainly Sundays)... last few years ended up sweeper (works team Sat) and a right back on Sundays which I hated... just not involved enough... played regularly until I was 38 then me haystack went (popped disc) and that was basically that... tried a couple of comebacks that ended a few years back playing me last game (all 15 mins!) at Roots Hall in a club 25 year anniversary game... all I can say is that whoever I played against or with (some ex pros and quite a few semi pros) I never felt out of my depth... I'm now Secretary of our old sunday mob and the veterans (where most of me mates are still playing with) so get over and help out and keep myself involved . Lot of good people met through local football over the years

Re: Tell me about your football career
Been a defender most of my life, left back then centre back.

After destroying all my knee ligaments 8 years ago I've ended up playing in goal (in a 6 a side league) for last few years. Miss playing on pitch, but not worth risk

I love being able to compete against (unfit) people half my age.

Although I often leave the word "unfit" out...

Re: Tell me about your football career
Played for quite a few teams around Sussex and ran my own Sunday side for 20 odd years (so I could get a game). Moved teams a lot because they probably realised that a 5 foot 5 striker who only scored around 7 goals a season (most were penalties or free kicks) wasn't much use for them!!

Then created and co ran a Free Adult Sunday League for around 11 years but called it a day playing about 5 or 6 years ago when arthritic hips kicked in.

Called time on the League after my lot got to a Cup Final and the buffoon in the middle (I told the Referees Secretary the bloke was not the best choice) sent off 7 players! Not ideal when you are Manager of one team and General Secretary of the League!

Local Sunday Football was dying anyway so went into Saturday Management for a couple of seasons and did ok but got fed up with all the crap you go through with whining players and standing on a cold, wet touchline every week.....

Funny thing is I don't really miss it any more but there again I bought some stupid trousers and took up golf!!!

Bringing back memories reading the posts.

I missed half a Sunday league season waiting for a cartilage op one year but still watched each week. One Sunday there was a ruck om the pitch and we all went on to break it up but my knee suddenly went and play had to be help up for a me, a spectator, to be carried off.
